In 1916, during the Easter period there was an attempt by a small group of militant Irish republicans to win independence from Britain. This was the most significant rebellion in Ireland's history. Though called
a military failure, it was the key to Ireland's freedom from the rule of Great Britain.
Gerry Hunt worked for 25yrs as an architect, eighteen of them with the IDA. In 1986 he left architecture and began drawing political cartoons. From this, he moved on to drawing entire comics, his first, self produced comic was a rhyming Spanish language work that he gave away to friends. He has since published `In Dublin City' and `The Streets of Dublin'.

Disappointed on a number of levels. Did not like the drawings. The whole point is gone in that. Very dark and unclear. And story content terrible undeveloped. The title. left lying without giving the reader the poem from which these lines come from. Dumb founding,
Good job done by O'Brien Press on the production of the graphic book. The drawings, pictures, and little extras stuffed into the front and back jackets are very well done, and make the story come alive. Details of events in the Rising are well done here. For all of these, it gets 3 stars.
My withholding 5 stars has to do with the history the larger historical context, in particular the politics of the Rising the Easter Rising is presented here as Good Guys/Bad Guys, 2-dimensional history. Unlike 'Brian Boru' (a magnificent O'Brien Press production) where the events belong to a past that is really over and gone, the Rising history is ongoing. In contemporary Irish politics, 'Blood upon the Rose' is close to a piece of propaganda for today's Sinn Fein (ex-Provisional IRA). (1) It gives the impression that all the British army soldiers in the Rising are themselves British, and that none are Irish. (2) On page 5, Joe Plunkett is shown saying that without the Rising there won't even be Home Rule. This is seriously misleading, since first, Home Rule legislation was already on the British statute book; second, the Rising's leaders rejected Home Rule because it wouldn't deliver a united non-partitioned independent republic; third, the Rising's political target was John Redmond and the Irish parliamentary party at Westminster, architects of the Home Rule program. That the Rising was an attack on Redmond and Home Rule was widely recognized at the time. None of this is mentioned here. (3) Many Irish people had serious moral objections to the Rising since those who led it despised democracy and the rule of law, and had never stood for election, in a society in which that was possible. That doesn't figure here. (4) The Rising was started in the most densely populated part of Ireland, and far more civilians were killed than combatants again, no mention of that. (5) The British army killed civilians in Easter Week, and that is shown here. So did the rebels, deliberately on the first 2 days, and that is not shown. (6) Nothing at all is here about the Irish unionist population. (7) There is one mention of 'German arms' on page 5, but nothing to tell the young reader that the 1916 Rising was (also) an opening of another front in World War I.
Overall, this is heavily slanted history.
